When I first bought the domain name AgingWithoutFamily, I didn’t know whether to make it a dot-COM or a dot-ORG. Dot-COM didn’t seem right, because I’m not selling anything and my goal isn’t to make a profit. But dot.ORG didn’t seem right either, because there wasn’t an ORG.
Well, it turns out that a real ORG flows naturally and almost inevitably from a dot-ORG, because dot-ORGs (like this website) take money and managing. In the course of many discussions about technical aspects of the website, it became clear that the website of my dreams was beyond my abilities and resources. A non-profit organization would be needed for the community and advocacy aspects of AgingWithoutFamily to develop.
Right now, AWF is the seed of an organization, a work-in-progress. Your ideas and participation will determine its future.
For me, the production of this website immediately created a small community, because there was no way I could do it alone. Several people have contributed extensively. Only a few have been paid at all, and none commensurate with their participation. An organization is necessary to gather the resources needed for this web to become a communication hub for people aging alone, and a player in the world of policy-making regarding Older Americans.
