The Five Wishes Living Will (FWLW) is legally binding in all but eight states (Alabama, Indiana, Kansas, New Hampshire, Ohio, Oregon, Texas, and Utah). It’s worth looking at even if you live in one of them.
In a series of checklists, the FWLW enumerates just about everything that might be included in a comprehensive living will, so it’s a huge help in sorting out what’s important to you. (It’s WAY easier than trying to think of and list everything on your own.) It’s also a good way to make your wishes known to medical personnel as well as your health representative. The checklists are clear, detailed and specific. Even in states where the FWLW lacks legal force, absent a challenge by a hostile relative or dogmatic health care provider, your FWLW would likely be considered a credible guide to your wishes.
The FWLW is available for a nominal fee at http://www.agingwithdignity.org/
